The Chennai Vijay Muhurat above is location-specific. Puja times vary across India, so readers outside Chennai should use a Panchang calculated for their own city.

Why Vijayadashami is Celebrated

Vijayadashami carries several traditions across India. The Ramayana tradition associates Dussehra with Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana, while Shakti traditions celebrate Goddess Durga’s triumph over Mahishasura. The festival therefore broadly symbolises the triumph of dharma and good over evil.

Vijayadashami 2026 in Tamil Nadu

In Tamil Nadu, Vijayadashami follows the Navaratri, Golu, Saraswati Poojai and Ayudha Poojai celebrations. It is traditionally considered auspicious for beginning education, music, dance and other forms of learning. Tamil festival calendars list Vijaya Dashami on 20 October 2026 and Vidyarambham on 21 October 2026.

Vidyarambham 2026

Vidyarambham means the ceremonial beginning of learning. Young children may be introduced to letters, while students may begin a new course in music, dance or another discipline. Procedures differ among Tamil, Kerala and other South Indian traditions, so families commonly follow the custom of their community, temple or teacher.

Dussehra and Ravan Dahan

In many parts of North India, Dussehra celebrations include Ram Lila performances followed by the symbolic burning of effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad. These public celebrations commemorate the Ramayana narrative and draw large community gatherings.

Shami Puja and Aparajita Puja

Shami Puja, Aparajita Puja and Seema Avalanghan are among traditions associated with Vijayadashami in different regions. These rituals are traditionally connected with the Aparahna period. Exact timings depend on local Panchang calculations.

Mysuru Dasara

Karnataka’s Mysuru Dasara is one of India’s best-known Vijayadashami celebrations. The festive season is associated with the illuminated Mysore Palace, cultural programmes and the traditional Vijayadashami procession. Local event schedules should be checked separately when planning travel.

Durga Puja Vijayadashami and Visarjan

In Bengali Durga Puja traditions, Vijayadashami marks the farewell to Goddess Durga and is associated with Sindoor Khela and idol immersion. Panchang treatment of Bengal Vijayadashami can differ because of tithi rules; city-specific calendars should be followed for exact ritual dates and times.
