What the dates mean
A government holiday and a school vacation are different things. The government may declare a festival holiday for covered offices while the education calendar gives students a longer break. Private, CBSE, CISCE and residential schools may also publish their own academic calendars.
Parents should therefore treat October 19 to October 21 as a state-specific planning reference and use the latest school circular for attendance.

Festival calendar around October 20
Navratri begins October 11 in the 2026 calendar. October 19 contains important regional Navratri and Puja observances, while October 20 is the general Vijayadashami/Dussehra date. October 21 is significant in several regional traditions. These overlapping dates explain why school calendars can show different vacation lengths.

Academic work before vacation
Students should complete assignments, practical records and project submissions before the break wherever possible. Parents should check assessment dates immediately after reopening. A short revision routine during a long holiday is useful when examinations are approaching, but the break should also provide time for rest.

Family travel planning
Festival travel can be crowded and expensive. Families should book important journeys early and keep the return trip comfortably ahead of the first school day. Large temples, public celebrations and transport hubs may have special crowd-management or traffic arrangements.
- Keep tickets and hotel confirmations available digitally.
- Carry emergency contacts and essential medicines.
- Allow extra road or rail time.
- Keep children supervised in crowded areas.

Government, bank and school calendars
A school holiday does not automatically mean banks and private offices are closed. RBI bank holidays are state-specific, government offices follow applicable notifications and private employers use their own leave policies. Families needing banking services should check the branch calendar separately.

Safety and cultural preparation
Families can use the holiday for religious observances, cultural programmes, family visits and rest. Follow local rules for public gatherings and fireworks, use safe electrical connections and keep children within sight in crowded venues.

Seven-day planning method
Use the first day to confirm dates, the second to finish urgent work, the third to finalise travel, the fourth for shopping and household preparation, the fifth for family time, the sixth to verify the return journey and the seventh to prepare school materials.

Final two days before reopening
Students should return to a normal sleep schedule, organise notebooks and check assignments. Families returning from travel should keep at least one buffer period where possible. The final evening should be used for school-bag preparation rather than last-minute academic work.

What can change?
Government orders, district decisions, examinations, weather conditions or institutional requirements can change school schedules. Always check the latest notice instead of relying on an old article or forwarded message.
