Masik Karthigai 2026: Key Details

Panchang timings can vary by location. A Tamil Panchang should therefore be checked for the reader’s own city when exact Nakshatra timings are required.

What Is Masik Karthigai?

Masik Karthigai is the monthly observance connected with Karthigai Nakshatra. The word “Masik” means monthly, while Karthigai is the Tamil name associated with the Krittika star. The day is marked in Tamil calendars throughout the year, although the grand Karthigai Deepam celebrated during the Tamil month of Karthigai has much greater prominence.

Drik Panchang lists 30 September 2026 as a Masik Karthigai day for Tamil Nadu. It also explains that Karthigai observances are especially associated with Tamil Hindu tradition and the lighting of rows of oil lamps.

Why Is Karthigai Important in Tamil Tradition?

Light is the central visual symbol of Karthigai observances. Families traditionally light earthen or brass lamps at their homes and prayer spaces. The glowing lamps represent auspiciousness, devotion and the triumph of divine light over darkness.

Karthigai is also closely connected with Lord Murugan in Tamil devotional tradition. The six Krittika stars are traditionally linked with the six divine mothers who cared for the infant Murugan. Lord Shiva is also worshipped, particularly because the famous annual Karthigai Deepam tradition is associated with Shiva appearing as an infinite column of fire.

How to Observe Masik Karthigai at Home

• Clean the home and puja area before evening worship.
• Place traditional oil lamps or agal vilakku in a safe location.
• Light the lamps at the entrance and prayer area after sunset according to family custom.
• Offer flowers, fruits and simple naivedyam.
• Pray to Lord Shiva, Lord Murugan or the family deity.
• Recite familiar devotional hymns, mantras or Murugan prayers.
• Share prasadam with family members after the worship.

Deepam and Its Significance

The traditional lamp is one of the most recognizable elements of Karthigai. Lighting a deepam is viewed as an act of devotion and a prayer for wisdom, peace and prosperity. In Tamil homes, rows of small lamps can create a simple yet beautiful atmosphere for evening worship.

For safety, lamps should always be placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface and kept away from curtains, children and other flammable materials.

Masik Karthigai and Karthigai Deepam: Are They the Same?

They are related but should not be confused. Masik Karthigai occurs every month when the relevant Karthigai Nakshatra observance is marked. Karthigai Deepam, on the other hand, is the major annual festival during the Tamil month of Karthigai. In 2026, the annual Karthigai Deepam is listed for 24 November.

The annual festival is particularly famous at Tiruvannamalai, where the Mahadeepam tradition attracts large numbers of devotees. The September 30 observance is the monthly Karthigai and not the annual Karthigai Deepam festival.
