From Film Family to Leading Man
Ranbir Kapoor was born into one of Hindi cinema’s best-known film families. He is the son of actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor and the grandson of filmmaker-actor Raj Kapoor. Yet his route into acting also included learning filmmaking from behind the camera. Before becoming a leading actor, Ranbir worked as an assistant director, including on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black.
Bhansali later launched him as a lead actor opposite Sonam Kapoor in Saawariya in 2007. The film itself had a mixed commercial reception, but it began a screen career that would soon move through romantic comedy, coming-of-age drama, musical tragedy, biographical drama and action.
Movies That Shaped Ranbir Kapoor’s Career
Wake Up Sid
Wake Up Sid became one of Ranbir’s defining early performances. His portrayal of an aimless young man gradually learning responsibility helped establish the coming-of-age space that audiences would often associate with his early career.
Rockstar
Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar gave him the emotionally intense role of Janardhan “Jordan” Jakhar. The film and its music developed a lasting fan following, and Jordan remains among Ranbir’s most recognisable characters.
Barfi!
In Barfi!, Ranbir played a deaf and mute young man, relying heavily on physical expression rather than dialogue. The performance expanded perceptions of his range and became another milestone in his career.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
The romantic drama paired him with Deepika Padukone and became a widely watched mainstream success. His character Bunny, torn between a restless love of travel and emotional connection, remains popular with younger audiences.
Tamasha
Ranbir reunited with Imtiaz Ali for Tamasha, playing Ved, a man struggling between social expectations and his creative identity. The film has continued to generate discussion among fans well beyond its theatrical run.
Sanju
Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju cast Ranbir as actor Sanjay Dutt. The role required him to portray different phases of Dutt’s life and became one of his biggest commercial successes. He subsequently won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for the performance.
Brahmāstra and Animal
Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva placed Ranbir at the centre of a large-scale fantasy adventure and paired him on screen with Alia Bhatt. In 2023, Animal presented him in a much darker, violent role. The film generated substantial commercial attention as well as debate over its themes and depiction of violence. Ranbir won another Filmfare Best Actor award for Animal.
Ranbir Kapoor at 44: Ramayana Is the Big 2026 Story
Ranbir’s 2026 birthday comes shortly before one of the most closely watched projects of his career. Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana features him as Lord Rama, with Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. The first part is being prepared for a Diwali 2026 release in India. During the film’s San Diego Comic-Con presentation in July, Ranbir discussed the responsibility and apprehension involved in portraying Rama.
The scale of the project has also attracted international attention. The production is conceived as a two-part adaptation, and its cast brings together prominent names from different Indian film industries. That makes the weeks following Ranbir’s September 28 birthday particularly significant for fans awaiting his next major screen appearance.
Love & War Brings a Bhansali Reunion
Another major project is Love & War, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and starring Ranbir alongside Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on 21 January 2027. It marks a notable reunion between Ranbir and Bhansali nearly two decades after Saawariya.
On 24 September 2026, only days before Ranbir’s birthday, the makers unveiled his first look from the film. That fresh promotional reveal gives fans another timely reason to discuss the actor’s upcoming work during his birthday week.
Family and Personal Milestones
Ranbir married actor Alia Bhatt in April 2022. The couple have a daughter, Raha. Their relationship has also intersected professionally: they appeared together in Brahmāstra and are part of the principal cast of Love & War.
Ranbir’s parents, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor, were both prominent Hindi-film actors. His grandfather Raj Kapoor was among the most influential figures in Indian cinema. The family connection gives his career a distinctive historical backdrop, although his own filmography has developed a recognisable identity through collaborations with filmmakers including Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Basu, Rajkumar Hirani, Ayan Mukerji and Sandeep Reddy Vanga.
Awards and Career Recognition
Ranbir has received multiple Filmfare honours during his career. Among his Best Actor wins are awards for Sanju and Animal. Earlier performances in films such as Rockstar and Barfi! also established him as a major awards presence. Awards are only one measure of a film career, but his repeated recognition across very different roles reflects the range of characters he has attempted.
